Third year Print

The first semester of the third year is filled with modules. These are the last ones of the course, and thus the last time you will have to touch those theory books!

The first semester is as follows:

Period 1

Marine Biology

HKZ06 - Marine research
Keywords:
Morphology, building with nature, consultancy report for an environmental impact assessment

Marine Policy

HKZ24 - Bridging conflicts of interest

key words:
communication skills, conflicting interest in coastal zone, stakeholder analysis

Many actors are involved in changing processes in areas. Decision in such cases will me made after hearing of all actors. In this module you have to organize a meeting with all stakeholders about a certain subject (like spatial planning of a certain area). This will give you knowledge about lobbying, networking and how to present your point of view.

Common module (Marine Biology and Marine Policy)

HKZ21 - Stress effects on coast and sea

Key words
Ecosystem research, multi stress, physical, chemical, biological and human aspects, toxic compounds, disturbance, loss of habitat, over explotation, different actors, TRIAD method, bio assay, bio monitoring, risk assessment, legal aspects, restrictions, Water Framework Directive, Marine Strategy Framework.

This module is about the consequences of human activities in coastal areas. The student chooses an activity in an coastal area (for example sand nourishment) and should describe the consequences (eco toxicology, disturbance) for the ecosystem, taking stakeholders and law and legislation into account. In this module a week-excursion to Wales to study the rocky shore is also included.

Period 2

Marine Biology

HKZ07 - Advanced bio-GIS
Keywords:
remote sensing, interpolation, spatial analysis and distribution maps

Marine Policy

HKZ08 - Coastal & Marine Spatial Planning
Keywords:
Spatial planning, decision making and management plan,

Common module (Marine Biology and Marine Policy)

HKZ22 - Integrated coastal zone management
Managing coastal areas is one of the main challenges coastal zone managers are confronted with. Different conflicting interests need to be balanced in such a way that the system can provide not only for current users but also for future generations. In real life this concept of sustainable development is difficult to put in to practice and even more difficult to monitor. The main issue in this final module of the coastal zone management curriculum is therefore to try to understand the full complexity of integrated coastal zone management.

Second Semester

The second semester is either filled with your project internship or your minor. You can pick how and when you will follow these two. Both fill one semester, and there is space for it either during the first semester of the third year or the first semester of the fourth year.
